Audio Books

Busy days seem to be the norm.  Schedules are full, and finding time to read that new book everyone is talking about can be a challenge.  Audio books are a wonderful solution. The library carries a new type of audio book called "Play Away".  Just insert your own ear-buds into this compact, ready to use recorder, press the on button and begin listening.  "Play Aways" are located just past the library's front desk and in the juvenile section.  Look for them the next time you visit the library.

Hugo Cabret

Hugo premieres at movie theaters on November 23.  This picture is based on Brian Selznick's book Invention of Hugo Cabret.  The book is a combination of a picture book, chapter book, and graphic novel, in a way.  It is geared for kids ages 9 - 12 but will keep the attention of older children and adults and won the 2008 Caldecott Medal for being the most distinguished picture book of the year.  More than 200 pencil-drawn illustrations help to tell the story of an orphan boy who lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station.  The mystery revolves around a mechanical man, a hidden message, a stolen key, a special notebook, and friends.  Visit the offical website for a trailer.  The producers have been saying that the movie will be a "close rendering of the original work".  I'm hoping that's true and that the movie is as incredible as the book. 

Selznick also has a new publication out last month titled Wonderstruck done in the same format.  It is also an amazing read.  Check them both out at the library today!

More Baseball

World Series time again and no one to cheer for.  As a Cub Fan I feel your pain.  I've heard the echo of "wait until next year" many times and I'm still waiting.  For any Cub fans who would like to relive past glory days, you might like to check out Wrigley Field Home of Chicago Cubs by Lew Freedam.  Great photographs and storylines.  Who knows, maybe next year....

Baseball Blues

It was a disappointing end to an exciting season.  Miller Park is a great place to watch a baseball game, rain or shine.  During the Brewers off-season, Friday's Front Row Sports Grill and the Brewers Team Store remain open.  This a great opportunity to enter Miller Park at no cost.  Are you interested in looking at other baseball stadiums?  The book Blue Skies, Green Fields by Ira Rosen looks at 50 major league baseball stadiums past and present including County Stadium.  And remember, it's only 162 days until Opening Day 2012 at Miller Park.

The Love and Logic series is my personal favorite and I often purchase these books for new parents. A few of my favorites are Love and Logic Magic for Early Childhood by Jim and Charles Fay, Parenting with Love and Logic by Foster Cline and Jim Fay which offers chapters on individual issues. Stop in To Say Goodbye

Emily Scherrer has been with the Waterford Library for five years.  During those five years she has made many friends among the patrons and staff.  We are both sad and excited for Emily as we watch her prepare for her long drive to Arizona to accept a new position as Youth Services Manager with the Yuma County Library System.  Her last day will be Saturday, October 22.  Stop in during our "Meet the Ghostbusters" program on Saturday from 1 - 3 to wish her well.  We will miss her and wish her good luck in her new position!
